A-Z of passwords

Your wifi router comes with a stock password straight from the factory. The majority of users will never change the password from this but this, however, can compromise every device on your network and your internet connection itself. The factory password can be easily found on the internet. It is recommended that you change this password immediately after connecting your router.

Aside from actually forgetting your password, it’s usually a good idea to reset your password every 60 days. Anybody with a laptop and knowledge of computers can connect to your network and siphon off your wifi and possibly your data from devices.

What is a strong password?

What is a strong password

In truth, with time any password can be broken. Adding at least one number or abstract character, however, can make it infinitely harder than cracking a password that is only alphabet characters. Alongside the other security protocols such as WPA2, having a secure password is one of the most underrated ways of securing your wifi network. Brute forcing your router is the most common method of doing this.

An automated program will run through an alphabet or thousands of common passwords until it comes upon your one, by adding abstract characters to your password, you prevent this and it becomes much hard to penetrate your network.

WEP

WEP is the open standard and first security protocol developed in 1999. It is not secure at all as the cryptographic technology at the time is substandard to what we have now. It only allows for 64-bit encryption whereas today we use 128-bit encryption or 256-bit encryption.

WPA

An improvement on WEP, but not much better. It still has generally poor security but is easier for devices to connect to. It uses Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) for more secure encryption than WEP.

WPA2

A huge improvement on WPA, it uses AES, Advanced Encryption Standard for encryption. It is also easier to configure than WPA. The main vulnerability of the network is that it can be attacked from the inside. So if someone is already on the network they can hack into the other devices on the network and compromise security.
